I tried setting it so I can auto open pivot files with pivot. But it won't let me, I click on it and everything, select pivot and it doesn't come up in the programmes list.

Click the browse for program button and select it manually.

That's what I meant I did, and it doesn't pop up in the list to choose from, it just highlights over adobe reader

That's just extremely weird, I tried the exact same thing with a new pivot.exe and it immediately went to my recommended programs.

After googling a while I found this, not sure if it's the exact same problem though.

it's opening with pivot 3, but still wont with pivot 2

Not sure if this would help, but if you're using the vanilla version of Pivot 2, try using Pivot hotkeys and and selecting that version to open the files with. I've had this problem when I was using the vanilla install of Pivot and that seemed to solve the problem.
