Ultimate run tutorial, by lemonAde.

READ FFS! I don't like nubs asking questions already answered.

VIEWED BEST IN FIREFOX

Alright. Another run tut, lol. >_>

Well, I've hardly seen any tutorials covering across-screen running, and none covering both.
And I'm doing this partially out of boredom, and also to help Dean, who I'm mentoring.

So, let's get started, shall we?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[.:In-place running:.]

In other words, running that's not across-screen, lol.
So, this is the easiest type of running, by most opinions.

For this type of running you should have three frames with the stick touching the ground, or even four if you want a slow and smooth run.
You could also use two if you have a really fast run. But three works for most kinds of runs.

For air frames, you can actually have anything from two to five frames. I usually use 2-3 frames, since that's more realistic. 4-5 frames for slow and smooth.

I won't do that homosexual frame by frame screenshot things which you learn nothing from, I'll just show a couple examples, and .pivs.

Example #1

Type: Realistic-ish.
Ground frames: 3
Air frames: 2
Total Frames: 10 (Full run loop)

Image
[ P I V ]

Frame #1: What the almighty Baha calls the vital frame, so let's all call it that. Basically the frame where the legs and arms cross.
Frame #2: Beginning the stride, uncrosses legs and arms and stuff.
Frame #3: Stretches out all limbs in the stride, going slightly up.
Frame #4: Basically just easing it here, going slightly downwards.
Frame #5: And we have contact! He lands, limbs starting to close and stuff.
Frames #6-10: Repeat frame 1-5, lol.

Just remember the trail movements, which I can't be assed to explain here. Covered briefly in Phoenix's Physics tut, and there's another tut on it as well.

Alright, just study the frames and stuff, k? I really see no point in taking screen shots of everything, you're just exhausting your scroll wheel. >_>

Example #2

Type: Slow&Smooth
Ground frames: 3
Air frames: 4
Total Frames: 7 (Half a run cycle)

Image
[ P I V ]

Not the best, but whatever, made it in like 10 minutes. I know the arms suck and stuff... >_> Took me like 10 mins though.

Anyway...

Frame #1: Vital frame...
Frame #2: Beginning the stride, uncrosses legs and arms and stuff.
Frame #3: Starting to stretch out the limbs, going up and forward.
Frame #4: Stretchiiing out more, easing upwards.
Frame #5: Stretching out a bit more, starting to ease down.
Frame #6: Going down, preparing to land.
Frame #7: Landing, limbs starting to close and stuff.

So that's that. Two different run styles covered, you can tweak in to your own preference, just some general guidelines.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[.:Across Screen Running:.]

Alright, now that you can animate a stick running in place, what if you need him to run across the screen?

HAVE NO FEAR! IT IS POSSIBLE! =O

Alright, whatever, lol. This section won't be as long since it's animated in a completely different way.
Well not completely, but it differs from in place running, lol.

First, if you animate him for more frames than 2 in the air, it will look slow and unrealistic. The hard part about across-screen running is easing the air frames right.
That's why so many people fail at that, lol. I have no idea how I'm going to explain it, so just download the .piv and be happy. Ground frames are pretty much the same, except you keep the foot in the same place, lol.

Example #3
Image
[ P I V ]

Alright, I guess I'll do the frame thing again... I'll copy and paste some, since I'm a lazy bastard.

Frame #1: This would be the "landing" frame...
Frame #2: Vital frame...
Frame #3: Beginning the stride, uncrosses legs and arms and stuff.
Frame #4: This is where the hard part begins, I usually put him so the back foot/leg is around where the knee was, to keep me on trail.
Frame #5: Going forward and a little down.
Frame #6: Landing... Yeah, repeat previous frames.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOAR RUNNING!
.pivs here.

Another across screen example.
In place, made for Dean mentoring
The .piv for the flashy one on top
New way of running which I came up with... I dunno lol.
Cartoony =D
.piv for my old avy, which started the Tinyman "fad".
Another across screener made while mentoring Dean.
A backwards run, lol.
Messing around with Dean's stick, Sexy with a D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND, that's that. I'm probably adding more later. Don't flame me for making another effing run tut, this is way more in depth than any other run tut I've seen.

That's all for NOW at least.

Thanks for reading! =D

Good job man, gave everyone a good variety of different run styles! You should have an edit in there and tell everyone that when they are making a run loop that it is best to make it like 2 - 4 steps to make it a not the same thing over and over and over again, know what I mean ?

The lf2 run style was great. I love the way he hangs in the air for a while. This will help anyone who reads the tutorial, cause great runs like that actually need to be read :P

Highly, you win.

But seriously, this tut really wasn't meant to be a "follow along" tut, for exactly how to animate a run, just some general guidelines, tips and tricks and such. lol.
Good examples anyway.
